7 Things to Know Before Taking Your First Cycling Class

Thinking about taking your first cycling class? Whether you are a total beginner or just trying a new workout, walking into a cycling studio for the first time can feel a little intimidating.

But I promise, you are going to have so much fun! Cycling classes are one of my favorite ways to work out, and there are a few things I wish I had known before my first class.

Here are 7 things you need to know before taking your first class!

1. Show Up 15 Minutes Early

Always arrive early! Whether you are visiting a new studio or taking your first-ever cycling class, showing up about 15 minutes early gives you plenty of time to get prepared.

This extra time also allows the instructor to show you how to adjust your bike, explain how the equipment works, and tell you what to expect during class. Proper bike setup is especially important for beginners because it can make your ride much more comfortable.

Use the extra time to introduce yourself to your neighbor, get settled on your bike, or do a few light stretches before class begins.

2. Wear Leggings

I cannot stress this point enough: wear leggings!

Look for leggings made with a moisture-wicking, breathable fabric that is designed for high-intensity workouts. You can expect to sweat during an indoor cycling class, so you will want something that keeps you comfortable throughout the ride.

I also recommend avoiding loose-fitting shorts. hey can ride up while you are cycling, which may become uncomfortable or distracting.

Shop some of my favorite legging styles!

3. Start With a Beginner-Friendly Class

Beginner classes are the BEST!

If you are nervous about taking your first cycling class, look for a class specifically designed for beginners. You will likely find that many people in the room are also new to cycling, so you can all learn together! A beginner-friendly instructor will typically spend more time explaining the bike, cycling form, resistance, and basic movements. They can also give you tips throughout the class to help you feel more confident.

4. Wear Comfortable Athletic Shoes

If you do not own cycling shoes, wear a comfortable pair of athletic shoes that you would typically wear for a workout or run. Make sure your shoes can fit securely into the bike's straps, and avoid shoes with extremely thick soles.

Some cycling studios offer cycling shoes for rent or have shoes available to borrow at the beginning of class.

5. Bring a Water Bottle

You have to stay hydrated! Bringing your own water will make it easy to take a quick sip during your ride.

6. Make Sure Your Hair is Secure

Anyone else get aggravated when your hair is everywhere?

Having your hair securely pulled back gives you one less thing to worry about while you are cycling. I usually recommend a ponytail, bun, or secure hair clip. Think about what hairstyle you would choose for a run or another high-intensity workout! You will want something that will stay in place as you are moving.

7. Have Fun!!!

Enjoy it!

I am a little partial, but cycling classes are truly one of my favorite workouts. You are typically in a dark room with music blasting through the speakers, surrounded by people cheering each other on. It is basically a party on a bike!

The energy is so good, and there is something about cycling in a group that can make you want to push yourself a little harder.

Most importantly, remember that you are not expected to be perfectly on beat or know exactly what you are doing during your first cycling class. Give yourself time to learn and get comfortable.

Take a deep breath, enjoy the experience, and remember that you are doing something your future self will thank you for!
